Six STEPS is 6x 2 hour sessions focused on Support, Tools, Empathy, Practical tips and Self-care.

Some of the topics discussed are:

  • Understanding the Stages of Change
  • Boundary Setting
  • Communication
  • Risk Safety Planning
  • Self-Care and Understanding Behaviour

Who is this program for?

Six STEPS is for anyone aged 18 and over wishing to regain control over their lives by learning new skills and strategies to help improve wellbeing.

Rather than focussing on the person you support, the program invites you to spend some time concentrating on your own needs and goals for the future.

We recommend attending 1-2 weekly support groups and/or engaging with our telephone counselling line (9442 5050) before starting Six STEPS.

Find a Support Group in your area here: Find Support Groups and Programs | ADMHSS or call the Parent & Family Drug Support Line on 9442 5050.

What can you expect?

Six STEPS is a structured program that runs in a small group setting of up to 8 people over 6 weeks.  Participants will be provided with a workbook, and a different topic will be covered each week to help you reflect on your personal situation, what things support you and what things get in the way.

Facilitators have a lived experience of caring for and supporting someone who uses alcohol and/or other drugs and use their own experiences to understand and assist you in moving in a positive direction.

Participants are expected to attend each week and the same people who start the program finish the program together. All participants are encouraged to ask questions in a safe, open, and non-judgemental learning environment.

Here is what past participants have had to say:

  • It was so good meeting other people who are going through similar issues, now I know I’m not alone.
  • Personally, I feel so different walking out then I did walking in 6 weeks ago.
  • Our facilitators were warm, welcoming and empathetic they certainly created a safe and supportive space.
